Door Dash Orientation

So Friday, I had my Door Dash Orientation. We were told to meet in front of a coffee shop prior to the start of the meeting. As I arrived I noticed two other gentlemen standing waiting for the same orientation I was. They happened to be talking about Uber when I walked up, where one guy was talking about one of his first Uber customers, whom he was dropping off somewhere in downtown Dallas. As he was driving down a street, he and his customer witnessed a mugging taking place. He drove up to the mugger where the customer then hit the mugger with the passenger door. The driver and customer both proceed to get out of the car where the mugger then pulls a gun on them. Instead of backing off, the driver then proceeds to tackle the mugger. At some point the police show up, and I don't remember if the mugger was arrested but the cops told this kid who was the driver that he was an idiot for trying to take on this guy with a gun and should consider himself lucky to be alive.

My girlfriend recommends Uber to me from time to time. I'm lukewarm to the idea, mainly because I don't think my car is up to Uber standards. This story doesn't exactly make me want to sign up.

On to Door Dash. This app is basically a food delivery service. You sign up, create an account, and basically can have any food order delivered to you ranging from Del Frisco's to Taco Bell. The catch being it has to be in an area Door Dash services. For the Drivers, they have to sign up for shifts and then have to physically be in that area when the shift starts. There's a range on the service, so a customer can't be living in a place like Lewisville and expect delivery from Dallas. All in all, the concept seems sound, and for someone who can't find a regular job, like me, it's a good way to be productive for a few hours a day, particularly lunch time, and earn a few bucks.

The orientation didn't scare me off and I signed up for an afternoon shift. It still doesn't take away from the fact I can't get a regular job. I do wish I was creative enough to think of one of these start-up companies and get set for life. Money, career, this is the way to go. Guess I figured I could make it with an honest man's line of work.

Hi There, Know Anyone Hiring?

Hi there.

My name is Andrew Sullivan. I am 31 and unemployed, which I have been for the better part of a year. I was let go from my last job in October 2014. I won't give the name of my company or what type I work I did, but it was a hyper focused industry. One that you just don't move to another city and find the local branch and jump on with them. So for the first time in five years, I was unemployed and needing to dust off the resume and start figuring out what I wanted to do next.

'Figuring out what I wanted to do next' has been rough to say the least. Finding any sort of leads has been extremely difficult. Honestly, I think I have more of a chance to date Ivanka Trump than I do trying to find a job online. I've had some ideas of areas I could go into based off my last job, and those areas seem to advertise a lot online, but alas, nothing. Even looking at the entry level positions hasn't been fruitful.

The main reason I'm writing right now is to try and convey my frustrations with job sites. I truly feel sites like LinkedIn, Indeed, Monster, etc. are useless when it comes to finding a job. Having a resume on Monster is like throwing a pebble into a lake and hoping a company you want to work digs into the ground and finds your pebble. The other thing I wonder is do these applications ever get viewed by someone? Or do they end up in some black hole of an email address?

My relationship has also felt the burden of this spell with unemployment. My girlfriend has felt the strain of the job search multiple times, causing a lot of anxiety, mainly due to the uncertainty that I can provide for her. These brink decisions were usually the result of me taking some sort of weird job, whether it was a 'work from home,' job, or an interview over Yahoo Messenger, or (and this is the best) one where they already told me I had the job, didn't even need an interview, and sent me a $4,000 check and told me to go buy office furniture. It's been desperate times, and unfortunately, I'm gullible enough to take imaginary carrots dangled before me.

I'm frustrated and don't know what to do. So much so I've started this blog to tell my story. I recently accepted a position with Door Dash. A food delivery service here in Dallas, TX that looks like might be a good way to generate some extra income. It's gotten to the point I have to consider this because I don't know what else to do. For lack of reason, I am unhireable.
